I absolutely love Tarja's solo work, and I'm looking forward impatiently for her next release. But like most Tarja and Nightwish fans, I will always hope to see Tarja reunite with Tuomas Holopainen somehow, someday. I will wish for this the rest of my life. So I have been thinking about the possible circumstances by which this could happen. Now I think most of us can agree that, while Dark Passion Play is a great album, and Annette fit the style of that album very well, us Nightwish (and Tarja) fans probably do not want to hear another NW album with Annette. And no, I am definitely not an Annette hater! Now I have noticed that within the symphonic metal genre, there are numerous examples of groups using semi-permanent or "guest" vocalists (think Therion). This is exactly what I would like to see Nightwish do for their next album. I'm sure you can think of some fantastic vocalists that would fit this role; the first that comes to mind of course is Floor Jansen, formerly of After Forever (now disbanded). Some others are; Lisa Middelhauve (formerly of Xandria), Sara Jezebel Diva (Angtoria), and I'm sure you can think of many others. Or maybe they could find a new, previously unknown talent? Or how about a collaboration between Amy Lee (Evanescence) and Holopainen? Interesting huh? And then if Nightwish wants to tour, they could employ a "guest vocalist", preferably one who could also handle the old Tarja/Nightwish songs. This way, they would not have to commit themselves to a permanent vocalist, and run the risk of irritating half their fans by selecting a vocalist who is not well received, which unfortunately is what has happened with Annette. So now let me get to the point of my discussion; which is, I believe a Nightwish "guest vocalist" scenario could lead to a Tarja/Holopainen reunion, perhaps not for the next NW album, but maybe several years from now after the bad feelings have subsided. As a NW "guest vocalist", Tarja could provide vocals on a NW studio album, then perhaps perform live with NW for a short tour, or for just a few shows (with an accompanying live concert DVD of course!), without having to obligate herself to a long grueling tour around the world, which is extraordinarily difficult for a female vocalist in a metal band. No long term commitments required under this scenario.
Thoughts anybody? Maybe Tarja herself would like to comment on this? Thank you for listening Tarja fans! RD
